Introducing your little one to new food items

The birth of the baby is one of the most joyous occasions in your entire life. You quickly learn to love going without sleep if it means getting to spend a few extra moments with your precious little one.

There are many things that no one can explain until you’ve held your own child and experienced the true joys of parenthood. There are also many obstacles that can be very difficult to understand until you have experienced them yourself. Among these is feeding your baby. In the very beginning things are a bit easier. A bottle every two hours or breast-feeding can completely comprise your baby’s early diet. This makes it very simple to choose what your baby’s going to eat throughout the day. You rarely have to worry about your child not liking something, or refusing to eat. As they grow older, they begin to develop their own unique set of tastes.


Starting solids and semisolid food items for your baby can be extremely exciting. It’s extremely important to choose an appropriate highchair for their size and weight. You need to make sure that the highchair is sturdy and more than capable of supporting your child. You also want to make sure that it allows your baby to keep their head up straight in an optimal eating position. This helps to prevent incidents of choking or falling. Both of these things can be extremely dangerous when your child is too small to necessarily care for themselves. Choking is something that almost every parent experiences to some degree. Babies will put almost anything in their mouths, and the highchair really allows you a safer measure of control.

Fortunately, there are a huge number of different highchair makes and models available. These come in almost every color and design you could possibly imagine. There are high chairs that can be folded up and stored, or ones that are heavy enough to become part of your kitchen furniture. With the help of proper equipment and a good pediatrician, feeding your baby doesn’t have to be as difficult as it may seem. These are just a few of the accepted age guidelines for certain foods:

0-4 Months

This is the time when the baby will eat only formula or breast milk. This time may be extended up to six months if the child is not yet ready to eat from a spoon. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, and you should start feeding when your baby is completely ready. Trying to force things too early can cause more problems than starting them too late.

4-9 Months

Again, this is simply a rough estimate of when solids should begin. You should never attempt to feed your baby solid food items until they are able to sit up on their own independently. Then, use a single grain rice cereal to get them accustomed to thicker foods from a spoon.

9-12 Months

This is an excellent time to start introducing newer tastes to your baby. Allow them to experience one new flavor at a time. Doing this can also help to determine whether or not your child has any food allergies. Start with things like vegetables to get them accustomed to this taste. Use only baby food that is recommended by your pediatrician.

1 Year +

After your child reaches a year old, it can be time to start foods that have a bit more of a solid consistency. Try things that have been cooked down and are easily mashed up. Always be aware of choking food such as grapes and hotdogs, and never use anything that isn’t approved./p>
